How A Game Over Screen Causes Mental Breakdown
I just updated the game again and finished my playthrough on the version for the web browser.
I may be a bit hyperbolic in my titling, but this took me two months to get right. I am happy that the game works, from start to finish, on the browser version. I even did all the secret stuff. :P But one thing that was a continual bee in my bonnet was the Game Over screen. So, this is a brief synopsis of the nightmare that was the "Game Over" screen. It was just fixed today. Again. Again. And, again. Yes, again.
"Mr. P. R. Miller, how could a Game Over screen cause you so much stress?"
The answer to that lies in the secrets - there is more than one Game Over screen. In fact, there are seven. Switching Game Over screens *usually* requires the use of plug-ins ... and it is either my setup, or my luck, but none of the current ones seem to work. I'm not exactly sure why, but something breaks them. And, so, finally fed up, I ripped the blasted plug-ins out and made my own solution that involved editing the "scenes manager" script directly.
"Mr. P. R. Miller, you shouldn't edit those files directly, ever! You should always use a plug-in!"
Well, after a few days of slamming my head against the walls trying to figure out why it was happening, I came up with a better solution: stop listening to all that sound advice. :D And, you know what? It's finally fixed. And tested on this very site. :P
For 95% of the game, you'll see this when Game Overs happen:
But, if you are particularly diligent, you'll start getting this message as you approach the end game:
And, after that... well... there are five more secret Game Over screens to find. The last of which is particularly nasty, but if you played my last game, you might find it at the last moment. :P
