HUGE UPDATE GOLBEZ% RELEASED


For your enjoyment, I present Golbez%


It's been such a long time since the last major update, and I intended to have the project done a few years ago, I've decided to release what is affectionately known as Golbez%.

Golbez% takes the game up through the end of the Tower of Zot and the beginning of the underground, where you battle Golbez.

  • Item system is completely revamped - 48 slots, just like the original. Still need to get that Life potion correct, though.***
  • Combat system has been built again from scratch for accuracy. It has never been more accurate than now.
  • New font less prone to glitching. I think an update to RPG Maker MZ caused that one.
  • Status windows are more descriptive.
  • Back row system was re-written from scratch.
  • Party system now matches original - 5 slots to put party members in, slot 1 is in the middle. If you want Cecil in the bottom slot solo in the back row, go for it.
  • Equipment windows revamped to make sure it works with new system.
  • Fat chocobo!
  • Vehicles completely revamped!
  • Relative agility and speed issues were patched up!
  • Those dummied out skills can be unlocked before you leave for Mist. But, it's hidden.
  • All monster logic has been revamped to follow 1991 to the letter of the law!
  • Monster stats now read directly from a separate database, eliminating my errors in stats once and for all.
  • Redid all battle backgrounds to be closer to 1991 (more like 2011).
  • Glitches fixed. Dear Lord, there were so many glitches I fixed. Combat glitches, item glitches, magic glitches, monster glitches, logic glitches... I do not think I could remember them all if I tried, but here's a short list:
    • Curative items/spells calculate correctly outside of battle.
    • Monster logic is handled now via custom scripting rather than trying to force it through MZ's system.
    • Calcify 1 and Calcify 2 now reasonably lead to Petrify.
    • Lots of monster stats were incorrect, so I made a much more solid system with a JSON database of everything that the battles now read.
    • Kain's Jump was fixed again to prevent edge-case crashes.
    • Fast and Slow were bugged - now they're not.
    • Back Row was bugged - now it's not.
    • Elemental weakness and resistances were bugged - now it's not.
    • Wall spell functions correctly now, reflecting to the other side regardless of caster.
    • Fixed a weird, weird, weird super-obscure bug I cannot believe I found that gave Yang 4 MP.
    • Fixed RNG battles - this one I'm embarrassed over, because the rarest encounter in each area couldn't be triggered, and there was a 1/8 chance it would trigger the last battle you had, leading to weird stuff - like Sandworms and Sandpedes in the Watery Pass, or Cocatrices in Mist Cave, or Tower of Zot monsters appearing on the world map.
    • Fixed RNG battles further - noticed some battles had no monsters, resulting in an instant win.
    • Still no dancers. But, I'm faster at this kind of scripting now, so I'm not as scared as I used to be. Except for Toroia. I'm terrified of that one.

I have a lot of work left to do, however, progress is coming along very nicely now. The engine is effectively finished - now it's a mad rush from cutscene to cutscene to cutscene... and I'm so sick of cutscenes at this point. Also, dialog. Sometimes I get creative block. Insulting characters I love isn't easy.

There will not be another partial demo released. Golbez% is a great "halfway" point for the game. But, if you find glitches, please let me know. That's the fastest way to get your name in the credits. :)

*** - This should be completely compatible with your old save files. The item system is a bit different now, so it is possible you might lose your items. Possibly equipment. Maybe. I don't know.
